Overview

This Wikipedia article is a biography of Stuart Haber, an American cryptographer and computer scientist widely credited as a co-inventor of blockchain-style data structures. With W. Scott Stornetta, Haber authored the 1991 paper “How to Time-Stamp a Digital Document” (Journal of Cryptology), which introduced cryptographically linked digital time-stamping to preserve the integrity and ordering of electronic records. Their work is the most frequently cited in Satoshi Nakamoto’s 2008 Bitcoin whitepaper and underpins the design of tamper-evident hash chains.

Key points

  • Haber and Stornetta’s 1991 paper “How to Time-Stamp a Digital Document” described linking document hashes into a chain so records cannot be altered or backdated without detection; it won a 1992 Discover Award for computer software.
  • Three of the roughly eight references in the Bitcoin whitepaper cite Haber and Stornetta, making them its most-cited authors.
  • Education: B.A. in Mathematics from Harvard (1978, magna cum laude) and a Ph.D. from Columbia (1987) under advisor Zvi Galil, on provably secure multi-party cryptographic computation.
  • Career: research scientist at Bellcore (from 1987, where he met Stornetta in 1989), co-founder of Surety Technologies (1994), and researcher at HP Labs (roughly 2002 to 2017).
  • Surety commercialized the time-stamping method in 1995, operating what is described as the oldest continuously running commercial blockchain, periodically publishing aggregated hash values to a widely witnessed public record.
  • Later roles include cryptographic advisory and Chief Cryptographic Officer positions at blockchain and cryptocurrency ventures.

Relevance to Truestamp

Haber and Stornetta’s linked time-stamping is the direct intellectual ancestor of Truestamp’s approach: hashing records and chaining them into tamper-evident structures to prove when data existed. Truestamp extends the same lineage with RFC 6962 leaf and node hashing over its own Merkle tree for inclusion proofs, a submission window framing of what a timestamp proves, and public-blockchain commitment rather than newspaper publication.
