Cornerstones, Foundation Deposits, and Time Capsules

How dated, sealed deposits (Mesopotamian foundation pegs, Egyptian foundation deposits, Masonic cornerstones, and modern time capsules) bind an inscribed record into a tamper-evident context to prove provenance, authorship, and a not-later-than date.

Overview

Across at least three millennia, builders have buried a dated, sealed, often inscribed deposit at the founding of a structure so that the deposit later proves who built it and roughly when. The mechanism is consistent: at the ceremonial moment of construction, a record, an inscribed object, coins, newspapers, documents, or an entire sealed chamber, is placed at a physically privileged, sealed location, under a foundation, inside a cornerstone cavity, or in a buried vault. Because the deposit is embedded during construction and sealed, its later discovery in place is strong circumstantial evidence that it, and the structure, existed no later than its stated date, and its inscription names the responsible party. The practice runs from ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian foundation deposits through Masonic and civic cornerstone-laying to the modern “time capsule,” which formalizes the idea with an explicit target opening date, corrosion-resistant containers, and separately distributed records that broadcast the deposit’s existence and location.

The deposits establish provenance (who commissioned or built the structure), authorship (the ruler or organization named in the inscription), and a not-later-than existence date, a terminus ante quem, by binding a dated record into a sealed, hard-to-forge physical context. This document treats the technique as one member of a long lineage of provenance and priority methods, alongside the concealed-then-revealed anagram and cipher priority claims of the 17th century.

How it worked

The common thread is a hide-and-bind gesture in physical form. A dated record is emplaced at a privileged location during construction and then sealed, so that:

  • The sealed emplacement makes the deposit tamper-evident. It is embedded in the building fabric during construction, so recovering it undisturbed is evidence it has not been swapped or backdated.
  • The inscription or dated contents fix authorship and a date. A cuneiform peg names the king and the temple; a cartouche names the reign; year-stamped coins and dated newspapers self-date a cornerstone casket.
  • Its later recovery yields a not-later-than date. Finding the deposit in place proves the structure existed no later than the deposit’s stated date.

In ancient Mesopotamia, kings buried inscribed clay and copper foundation pegs and figures, often a figure holding a builder’s basket, naming themselves as builder of a named temple. These were deliberately hidden with their inscriptions out of sight, functioning as a record for the deity and for future discoverers rather than as public display. The Ur-Namma foundation figure carries: “To Inanna the lady of Eanna, his lady, Ur-Namma the mighty king, King of Ur, King of Sumer and Akkad, her temple he built, to its place he restored it.” A foundation figure of Shulgi for the Temple of Nimintabba at Ur reads: “Nimintabba, his lady, Shulgi, mighty man, king of Ur, King of Sumer and Akkad, her house, built.” The earliest inscribed foundation cones are conventionally attributed to Enmetena (Entemena) of Lagash around 2400 BCE, with the practice continuing through Gudea of Lagash (whose copper pegs for the Eninnu temple of Ningirsu at Girsu survive in collections such as the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum) and the Ur III kings.

In Egypt, temple and tomb construction was preceded by the foundation ritual pedjeshes (“stretching of the cord”), which laid out the plan with stakes and cord before groups of objects were buried below key architectural points. Deposits contained model tools, pottery with food offerings, linen, reed mats, and faience plaques and scarabs bearing the pharaoh’s name in a cartouche, which acts as a dating tool tying the structure to a named reign.

Notable examples

  • Nabonidus dates an older foundation deposit. While rebuilding the Ebabbar temple of Shamash at Sippar, Nabonidus (last king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, reigned 556 to 539 BCE) dug down to older foundations and recovered the foundation inscription of Naram-Sin of Akkad, then attempted to compute its age. The Nabonidus Cylinder from Sippar records that he “dug to a depth of eighteen cubits into the ground and then Shamash, the great lord, revealed to me the original foundations of Ebabbar, the temple which is his favorite dwelling, by disclosing the foundation deposit of Naram-Sin, son of Sargon, which no king among my predecessors had found in three thousand and two hundred years.” This is a documented ancient case of a foundation deposit being used as datable evidence of a structure’s antiquity, which has earned Nabonidus the popular label of “first archaeologist.” His 3,200-year estimate was inaccurate: with Naram-Sin reigning around 2254 to 2218 BCE and Nabonidus writing around 550 BCE, the real gap was closer to 1,650 to 1,700 years, so his figure overshoots by roughly 1,500 years. The dating attempt itself, however, is genuine.

  • Egyptian foundation deposits at Hatshepsut’s temple. The best-documented set of Egyptian foundation deposits is at Queen Hatshepsut’s mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari (deposits associated with her reign, around 1479 to 1458 BCE). By the Metropolitan Museum’s account, eleven foundation deposits can be associated with the temple, eight of which were discovered by the Museum’s Egyptian Expedition. Three deposits along the eastern enclosure wall, excavated in the 1926 to 1927 season, yielded 299 scarabs and stamp-seals inscribed with every title Hatshepsut held. The cartouche is the provenance and authorship marker, tying the structure to a named reign.

  • Masonic and civic cornerstone-laying. From the 18th and 19th centuries onward, a hollow cornerstone, or a copper, zinc, or lead casket set beneath it, has been filled with a dated snapshot of current coins, newspapers of the day, the ceremony’s printed program, and historical records, then sealed into the building fabric during a public dedication. The coins and dated newspapers self-date the deposit; the sealed emplacement makes it tamper-evident, and its recovery on demolition or renovation confirms a not-later-than date. The U.S. Capitol cornerstone was laid on September 18, 1793 by George Washington in a Masonic ceremony. The 1795 Massachusetts State House time capsule, reportedly associated with Samuel Adams and Paul Revere, is among the oldest known U.S. examples and was re-examined and re-sealed in modern times.

  • The Westinghouse Time Capsule of Cupaloy and its Book of Record. For the New York World’s Fair, Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company sealed an 800-pound, torpedo-shaped tube (about 90 inches long) at noon on September 23, 1938, the autumnal equinox, lowering it about 50 feet into the ground at Flushing Meadows, to be opened in the year 6939. The term “time capsule” was coined by the company’s public-relations counsel, George Edward Pendray. The tube was made of “Cupaloy” (99.4% copper, 0.5% chromium, 0.1% silver), engineered to resist corrosion for 5,000 years, and held everyday 1930s items, seeds preserved in inert gas, microfilm, and novelties such as a Mickey Mouse watch and a Kewpie doll. Crucially, a separately printed “Book of Record of the Time Capsule of Cupaloy” was distributed to thousands of libraries, museums, and monasteries worldwide to broadcast the deposit’s existence and precise location, recording coordinates of about 40 degrees 44 minutes 34 seconds N and 73 degrees 50 minutes 43 seconds W (the source gives fractional seconds of .089 and .842), along with an electromagnetic detection method and a Key to the English Language. The Book of Record states that the capsule was “deposited on the site of the New York World’s Fair on September 23, 1938,” to be opened in “the 6,939th year since the birth of Christ,” and provides astronomical data so that “people of the future will therefore be able to determine the number of years that have elapsed since our time.” A second capsule was buried on October 16, 1965 in a Kromarc stainless alloy and held roughly 750,000 signatures.

  • The Crypt of Civilization, Oglethorpe University. Conceived in 1936 by Oglethorpe University president Dr. Thornwell Jacobs, who is called the “father of the modern time capsule,” and assembled with archivist Thomas Kimmwood Peters, this airtight, room-sized vault (a converted basement swimming pool in Phoebe Hearst Hall) was packed with thousands of artifacts, microfilmed texts, sound recordings, and a device to teach English, then welded shut. It was sealed on May 28, 1940 and is to be opened on May 28, 8113 A.D. The opening date was fixed by a deliberate calculation: 6,177 years forward from the then-accepted 4241 BCE origin of the Egyptian calendar, mirrored around the 1936 conception year (1936 plus 6,177). The precise sealing date and the explicit, arithmetically justified opening date make the deposit an unusually formal record: a sealed record with a fixed emplacement moment and a fixed future disclosure moment.

Relevance to Truestamp

A dated foundation deposit or time capsule is a rough physical ancestor of cryptographic proof of existence: a record is bound into a sealed context that makes its date credible without trusting the claimant’s later word, much as a data commitment binds a hash into a hard-to-alter medium so that later verification proves the data existed no later than that commitment. Nabonidus reading a recovered deposit to establish when something existed is an ancestral act of verification, and the Westinghouse Book of Record, which broadcast the deposit’s existence and location to thousands of independent archives, prefigures the widely-published, redundant-witness strategy behind proving that data existed at a time and its submission window. Truestamp is a recent, mathematically rigorous member of this long lineage, not its culmination.
