Sealed Deposits with Learned Societies
How scientists secured priority by lodging a dated, signed sealed note with a learned society (the French pli cachete, the Soleau envelope), fixing a date without disclosing the content until the seal was opened.
Overview
From the 17th century onward, scientists needed a way to secure priority for a discovery before they were ready, or willing, to publish it in full. Alongside the encrypted anagram (see anagram and cipher priority claims), a more institutional technique emerged: the sealed deposit. A dated, signed document was lodged unopened with a trusted body, to be opened later on demand or after a fixed interval. The French Academie des sciences formalized this as the “pli cachete” (sealed note), a procedure that persists today. The mechanism separates the moment of commitment (deposit and date) from the moment of disclosure (opening), which is exactly the property a priority claim needs: it establishes who knew what, and provably by when, without revealing the content in the interim.
How it worked
A discoverer wrote out a signed statement of a finding, sealed it, and deposited it with a learned society, which recorded the date of receipt. The seal kept the content secret while the dated register entry fixed that the claim existed no later than the deposit date. When the author chose, or when a rival’s parallel work surfaced, the sealed note could be opened and read publicly to establish priority after the fact.
The Academie des sciences, founded on 22 December 1666, established a standing procedure for depositing a signed, dated sealed note to claim priority without disclosure. Sources place its formalization in the 18th century; one source reportedly cites 1735, but that specific date traces to a single source and should be treated with caution. Under the modern rule, a pli is opened only on the author’s request during their lifetime, or one hundred years after deposit, before the committee that oversees the sealed notes. By the Academie’s account roughly 18,000 have been deposited, and about thirty are still registered per year. By some accounts, systematic opening of old unclaimed plis began in the 1970s, though this timing is not independently corroborated.
The French “Soleau envelope” is the direct bureaucratic heir of this idea. Named after its originator Eugene Soleau and administered by France’s National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), it is a sealed, officially dated envelope that serves as legally recognized proof of priority-of-conception and date for an invention or creative work, without publishing its contents. It generalizes the pli cachete beyond a learned society to a state registry.

- Scott de Martinville’s sealed packet on sound recording (1857, opened 1861). On 26 January 1857 Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, inventor of the phonautograph, deposited a sealed packet titled “Principes de phonautographie” with the Academie des sciences, his earliest recorded statement of sound recording. At his own request, it was opened during an Academie session on 15 July 1861. It is a textbook use of the sealed-note-on-demand mechanism to date-stamp an invention while keeping it secret.
- Charles Cros’s “Paleophone” sealed note (1877). Cros sent a sealed note, describing his “Paleophone” method of recording and reproducing sound, to the Academie des sciences, which registered it on 30 April 1877, months before Edison’s phonograph. When Cros learned of Edison’s parallel work, he asked the Academie to open his sealed note to give his priority official character; it was opened and read publicly later that year, on 3 December 1877. This demonstrates the deposit-then-open-to-claim pattern in a live priority race.
- The Royal Society’s dated records. The Royal Society similarly used its Register Books, Letter Books, and Classified Papers as a permanent dated record and evidence of priority for submitted ideas. This was a softer, non-sealed institutional analog: the date of entry, rather than a physical seal, carried the evidentiary weight.

Like a trusted timestamp, the pli cachete and the Soleau envelope bind a payload to a date without disclosing it: the seal provides tamper-evidence, and the “open after a fixed interval, or on the author’s demand” rule mirrors the separation of commit-time from reveal-time seen in a submission window. The difference is the trust model, since these historical schemes relied on an institution’s custody and a physical seal, where cryptographic proof-of-existence relies on verifiable math to prove a statement existed at a time.
