Seals, Signets, and Notaries
How cylinder seals, wax signets, papal leaden bullae, and the notarial instrument bound authorship, authenticity, integrity, and provenance to documents and made tampering evident: physical ancestors of cryptographic proof of existence.
Overview
Across roughly five millennia, people used physical instruments to bind authorship, authenticity, integrity, and provenance to a document, and to make tampering evident. A Mesopotamian cylinder seal was a small engraved stone rolled across wet clay to leave a continuous relief frieze that served as its owner’s unique mark. Wax seals and signet rings pressed a distinctive intaglio design into wax that fractured if broken. The papal leaden bulla was a lead disc struck between two dies and hung from parchment on cords. The notarial instrument added a human institution: a scrivener who drafted a document in fixed form, subscribed it with a unique hand-drawn signum, and gave it public evidentiary weight.
Each mechanism separated a hard-to-forge authenticating mark from the content it protected. It is an early physical analogue to proving a document’s origin and integrity, and one member of a long lineage of provenance and priority methods rather than a single origin point.
How it worked
The instruments in this family share a common shape: a distinctive, hard-to-reproduce mark applied so that it both attests a document and reveals interference.

Cylinder seals: A small cylinder of stone (lapis lazuli, agate, chalcedony, and others) was carved in intaglio and in reverse, then rolled across moist clay to leave a continuous raised frieze. Per the Metropolitan Museum, when rolled over moist clay the reverse-engraved images “left impressions that confirmed the owner had authorized the text,” and the design “acted as a unique identifier, indicating the seal’s owner and ensuring the authenticity of documents, containers, or doors.” The earliest documented use was rolling seals over hollow clay balls (bullae) holding numerical tokens, and later over tablets, clay envelopes, jar stoppers, and door bolts, so a broken sealing revealed tampering. Britannica notes cylinder seals “were employed in marking personal property and in making documents legally binding.”

Wax seals and signet rings: An engraved intaglio matrix, in metal or a set stone, was pressed into softened wax to leave a raised mirror-image design. Seals “were used to endorse documents just as the signature is today” and also to literally close them. With sealing wax the ring design shifted to intaglio so as to leave a cleaner impression. Two-sided pendant seals paired a matrix with a counterseal so the wax impression was two-sided, which by some accounts was done to make a document as tamper evident as possible. The wax wafer was engineered to fracture if removed, breaking a seal without permission was treated as a serious offense, and a noble’s signet was often destroyed at death to prevent forgery.

Papal leaden bulla: A lead disc was struck between two engraved dies. The Catholic Encyclopedia records that after the 13th century the seal “bore the heads of the two apostles [Saints Peter and Paul] on one side, and the name of the pope on the other,” and that “after the year 885, the letters of the pope’s name were usually stamped round the seal in a circle with a cross in the middle.” The lead seal was hung from the parchment “attached with laces of hemp” for ordinary letters and “with silken laces of red and yellow” for solemn documents. One of the principal tests of genuineness “seems to have been supplied by counting the number of points in the circular outline of the leaden seal or in the figure of St. Peter depicted on it.”

Notarial instrument: A Roman tabellio was a private scrivener who drafted legal instruments in recognized form for a fee. An instrument became probative only through public process: it could be “made probative, i.e., imbued with fides publica, ‘public faith and credit’” by attaching copies of judicial proceedings, and later by registration or deposit in public archives. Justinian’s law required recitation before a judge before recordation, “a process known as insinuatio.” Medieval Italian notaries styled themselves notarius et tabellio and authenticated instruments with a unique hand-drawn signum plus a fixed document structure, so the instrument itself carried evidentiary authority and identified its issuing notary.
History and mechanics
The earliest cylinder seals date to the Protoliterate Period, about 3400 to 2900 BCE, per Britannica, and the form persisted across Near Eastern cultures for millennia. In the medieval West, wax seals were common in royal chanceries by about the end of the 10th century and were adopted by freemen by the mid-13th century.
The papal chancery standardized its solemn form under Leo IX from 1049, when solemn originals carried the rota, a wheel-like device bearing a papal motto, and the Bene Valete monogram, described as the equivalent of the pope’s signature. The rota motto differed by pope; sources differ on the exact motto attached to individual popes, so specific attributions here are omitted. The leaden bulla authenticated papal acts for roughly nine centuries. Under Leo XIII, elected in 1878, a reform whose headline change was abolishing the archaic chancery script also replaced the old leaden seal “in many cases by a simple stamp bearing the same device in red ink.”
Popes also took direct anti-forgery measures. By some accounts Pope Gregory VII (r. 1073 to 1085) “refrained even from attaching the usual leaden seal to a bull for fear it should fall into unscrupulous hands and be used for fraudulent purposes,” and Pope Innocent III (r. 1198 to 1216) “issued instructions with a view to the detection of forgeries.”
Related instruments in the same tradition include Byzantine and Holy Roman imperial golden bulls (the golden seal, or chrysobull, as on the Golden Bull of 1356 by Charles IV), the stamp and scarab seals of ancient Egypt and the Indus Valley, East Asian name seals (chops) using red seal paste, and the split-document techniques (chirograph or indenture and tally sticks) where matching physical edges proved integrity. The medieval discipline of diplomatics grew up to study these features systematically and to distinguish genuine documents from forgeries.

Each instrument in this family binds a hard-to-forge authenticating mark to a document so that origin, authorship, and integrity travel with it and tampering becomes evident, the same problem a hash-based commitment addresses. Like the anagram priority claims of a later era, these methods separate an authenticator from the content it protects and attest that a specific artifact existed and was witnessed at or before a point in time, a physical relative of proving a result existed without revealing it and of a dated submission window.
